Ages 6-8 Years (grades 1 & 2)

Our attempt for this group is to nurture the educational experience of children and to foster a love of learning.
In this year the children are led to their first experiences of forms, sounds, and sequencing of letters and numerals by using pictures, rhymes, and stories.  These are recognized and memorized through lots of practice involving movement, verses, drawing, and writing.
The core curriculum in Group 2 is:
  • reading approached through writing
  • letter blends and word families
  • qualities of numbers
  • introduction of the four processes in Math
  • multiplication tables
  • and form drawing
Beyond the core curriculum carried by the core facilitator, Group 2 also receive instruction in Hindi, Telugu, Art, handwork, Games and Movement.
 In language:
  1. Students are introduced to the alphabet and vowels, with a strong emphasis on phonetics through the Jolly Phonics program.
  2. In addition to phonics, students work on sentence construction, where they form simple sentences using vocabulary words.
  3. Daily practice of reading
In Writing, students explore simple compositions, observation writing, and storytelling. They begin forming their own sentences, with focused attention on letter formation, handwriting skills, and creative expression. This stage supports growing confidence and independence in their written communication.
Math:
In math, the objectives are
  • understanding the quality of numbers
  • Practice of the four mathematical processes.
  • Practice of memorizing simple addition and subtraction facts
  • Practice and memorization of times tables up to 10 through movement, rhythm and written work
  • Introduce and develop an understanding of place value.
  • Practice with word problems and story problems. (application of the 4 processes)
  • Foster the enjoyment of mathematics through use of games and puzzles.
  • Develop greater facility with mental arithmetic. Experience numbers through movement and artistic activities
Project work:
Project work begins with observation walks, discussions and stories. These are then expressed through artwork, simple writing exercises and circle time discussions.
