Group 3: Ages 8-10 Years

 
Our attempt for this group is to help the transitions from the imaginative early childhood years into concrete experiences of childhood, developing an increasing awareness of the world. The core curriculum in Group 3 includes:
  • Reading fluency through regular practice
  • Spellings, writing & grammar
  • Practise of 4 processes in math
  • and form drawing
Beyond the core curriculum carried by the core facilitator, Group 3 also receive instruction in Hindi, Telugu, Art, handwork, Games and Movement. Stories are the vehicle for the teaching of language arts. Through imaginative storytelling, the teacher fosters the students’ auditory memory, builds their capacity to create mental images and visual memory, helps them develop a rich vocabulary, and fills them with a love of spoken and written language. The students retell the stories through speech, drama, art, and writing as the year progresses.

In Language, the overall Learning Objectives for the year are:
  • Developing fluency and a love for reading through narration of stories, reading aloud and encouraging daily reading at home slowly building up their own personal libraries-
  • Stories that include folk tales, tales from mythology, animal stories and nature stories.
  • spelling, writing, compositions, punctuation, parts of speech
  • vocabulary practice through consonant blend words and digraphs
  • Expand sight words
  • Introduction to Nouns, verbs, adjectives
  • Apply the above learnt skills in Paragraph writing, Simple compositions with Basic punctuation and creative writing
  • Project writing
  • During independent writing, children are able to break down words phonetically in order to produce spellings which make sense/ spelling support is given/ commonly misspelt words are taken up for practice
  • When children encounter unknown words while reading, they sound out the words phonetically and do not guess.
  • When children encounter short and common words while reading, they know the words quickly and automatically without having to sound them out.

    In math, the overall Learning Objectives for 8-10 year-olds for the year are:
      • Work and practice of Addition, Subtraction along with word problems
      • multiplication tables
      • Moving from horizontal sums to vertical sums (addition & subtraction)
      • Application of skills learnt through word problems
      • Measurement
      • long multiplication and division
      • Time, calendar and money value
